How Useful is the Internet?

The internet is extremely useful as a student nurse and even for those who have been practicing for a number years. Chat rooms, blogs, and websites can be used as recourses and as a form of communication. Nurses now have access to online databases which gives them access to all types of nursing journals, practice guidelines, and discussion boards. A community of nurses has been established in conjunction with the development and expansion of these new forms of communication. The internet allows for the interaction of nurses across the globe. The ability to share ones experiences and opinions diminishes the possibility of isolation and creates a social support network for many nurses.

Should You be Aware of Different Cultures as a Nurse?

YES! It is extremely important to be aware of different cultures and the way they live. An individual’s lifestyle can have great effects on their health. What people eat, what they do for work, and what they do for fun all have effects on their health. Many cultures have different perceptions on certain treatments and even have their own unique cures. Some cultures use herbs or even more spiritual methods such as meditation. As a nurse it is important to be aware of cultural differences and be able to recommend alternative modes of treatment when necessary. It is also important not to discriminate against an individual for their cultural beliefs.

How Important is Caring as a Student Nurse?

One of the main concepts I have been taught in my first semester is that of caring. Throughout all my classes I have been taught about the different concepts of caring and their importance. As a nurse I feel caring is important however, the physical and technical aspects become a priority for many individuals. As a student nurse I am limited by my technical abilities therefore I am given the opportunity to focus on caring. Over the years many nurses neglect this aspect of care due to time constraints. It is important not to lose touch of this ability. In my opinion caring should be a priority. Helping a client through comfort, support, and the maintenance of a positive attitude proves to be more helpful than most nurses think. In my journey I will work to apply and expand on the caring concepts I have attained so far.

Are The Effects of Technology on Communication Positive or Negative?

New forms of technology are being introduced into the health care system at an alarming rate. Nurses are constantly being forced to adapt and change their daily routines due to the introduction of new technology. New equipment for documentation, treatment, and daily care are constantly being introduced. The introduction of these new technologies has created more free time for nurses to spend at the bedside. Communication between nurses and their clients has become a more prominent part of a nurse’s daily care. Nurses now have time for more in depth communication with their clients. Nurses now have more time to educate their clients, talk them through any of their concerns, and to comfort them. It has also given nurses the oppertunity to share and communicate with one another using programs such as blogger!

Who am I?

Hi,
My name is Tanya and I am currently enrolled in my first year of nursing at U.O.I.T. Prior to my decision of wanting to become a nurse I was studying sociology at Trent University. I loved the classes but just did not feel a B.A would take me where I wanted go. After a year of exploration and research I decided on nursing. Job rates are high, it pays well, and it ties in to the social aspects I loved about my Trent classes.
Creating a blog is new to me and I am somewhat technologically challenged so I may struggle. I do however have a creative side and being able to intertwine that with my blog should prove to be exciting.
